The six essential nutrients are vitamins, minerals, protein, fats, water, and carbohydrates.

Proteins are made up of chemical 'building blocks' called amino acids. Your body uses amino acids to build and repair muscles and bones and to make hormones and enzymes. They can also be used as an energy source.

Vitamins and minerals boost the immune system, support normal growth and development, and help cells and organs do their jobs.

Carbohydrates include essential nutrients like sugars, starches and fiber. Your body uses carbs to make glucose (blood sugar) for energy.

Dietary fats are essential to give your body energy and to support cell function. They also help protect your organs and help keep your body warm. Fats help your body absorb some nutrients and produce important hormones, too.

Water is vital to our health. It plays a key role in many of our body's functions, including bringing nutrients to cells, getting rid of waste, protecting joints and organs, and maintaining body temperature.

Not all fats are alike. Saturated fat, found mainly in meat and dairy foods, contributes to clogged arteries and cardiovascular disease. But monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, found in plants and healthful oils, actually protect your health by improving your cholesterol levels.

Absolutely! If you enjoy eating dessert, try eating it in smaller portions or not eating it every night. Or look for healthy alternatives to your favorite dessert (i.e. - frozen yogurt instead of ice cream).

MyPlate is a project from the United States Department of Agriculture that helps you make healthy food choices. The suggested food groups on MyPlate are fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy. Check out the MyPlate diagram below.

A food is considered healthy if it contains one or more of the six essential nutrients we need to survive. It should also fall into one of the food group categories on MyPlate. If it does, it will provide your body with what you need to thrive each day!
